Training on Ethics in Health Research

The Health Directorate organized  the Negotiation kick-off information meeting with project coordinators and Health NCPs for the 2011-single-stage call in the morning of Monday 7th March 2011. The meeting has been followed by an Ethics training targeted to Health NCPs in the afternoon. The Ethics training has been  jointly organized by the Ethics Advisory Group of the Health-NCP-Net  project and Directorate Health.

Mrs. Marta Barrionuevo, HEALTH-NCP-NET Coordinator, welcomed the participants and introduced the goals and objectives of the training course.

Dr. Joana Namorado,  responsible for Ethics, Gender Issues of Unit F HEALTH presented the Commission's view on the ethics management of EU funded projects, with specific focus on the Ethics evaluation process and the differences between ethical screening and ethical review (the 2-steps of the Ethics Review procedure) .

Dr. Anne Demoisy , Consultant from Rhizome SA and ethical expert of the European Commission, gave a presentation on “How to complete your ethics section in an EU-funded proposal: Strong points for an evaluation”. The speech focused on the best way to manage ethical issues on the Part B of a collaborative project, providing useful hits from the point of view of an ethical evaluator.

Dr. Caroline Gan Combe , ethical expert of the European Commission,  focused her presentation on a particular (but very wide) issue of ethical checklist: Data protection. Ethical risk management in EU-funded projects should take in consideration data protection in its widest definition and considering all the potential risks connected to data storage and use ( Collection, structure, usage, access, communication) and their impact even after the end of the project.

The last speech of the day was given by Dr. A ndrew Bottomley, PhD,  from the European Organization for Research Treatment of Cancer in Brussels, and member of HEALTH-NCP-Net Ethics Advisory Board.  The presentation  described how Ethics is considered and managed  in the world of Health research, besides EU-funded research project, also providing history cases of famous research which encountered many controversial ethical issues.
