Ethics Advisory Workgroup (EAWG)

 

The experts of the Ethics Advisory Workgroup ( EAWG) have enormous experience in dealing with ethical issues in health research. They are experienced researchers and reviewers of projects funded by the European Commission. The three experts are:

  Andrew Bottomley, European Organization for Research Treatment of Cancer in Brussels, Belgium


"Andrew Bottomley’s background includes studies as a psychologist in the UK, where he obtained a PhD by examining the impact of group psychological interventions on cancer patients’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Dr Bottomley’s passion for more than the last decade and a half has been to understand the consequences of cancer and its treatment on patients’ HRQoL. Since 1998 he has led the European Organisation for Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Department, based in Brussels, Belgium, where he is now also the EORTC Assistant Director. Dr Bottomley serves on numerous editorial Boards including The Lancet. He has published over 95 peer reviewed articals. He also has served on the ethical committee of the WHO International Agency for Research in Cancer, in Lyon, France, and has served as a scientific advisor the European Commission for the 7th Framework program as well as an ethical advisor for both the 6/7th framework. He is a founding member of the Cochrane collaboration HRQoL methods group"
  Andreas Kurtz, Charite in Berlin, Germany

Andreas Kurtz received his PhD from the Academy of Sciences of the German Democratic Republic 1990 in cell biology. His post-doctoral training at the Ludwig Institute and at NIH focused on cell growth regulation, growth factors, developmental biology and cancerogenesis. He joined Georgetown University in 1995 and later Harvard Medical School as an Assistant Professor where he was developing therapeutic approaches for nervous system tumors. In 2003 he was appointed Head of the German Stem Cell Authority at the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin. He then became founding faculty PI at the Berlin-Brandenburg Center for Regenerative Therapies and also the Berlin School for Regenerative Therapies, where he focuses on the development of cell therapies using stem cells and immune cells. Dr. Kurtz is also an invited Professor at Seoul National University, Korea and PI and national Contact at the European Stem Cell Registry Project. His main interest in Ethical issues are ethics of stem cells and their application and animal ethics.
  Margit Sutrop, University of Tartu, Estonia

Margit Sutrop is Professor of Practical Philosophy and Director of the Institute for Philosophy and Semiotics at the University of Tartu, Estonia. She is the founding Director of the interdisciplinary Centre for Ethics at Tartu University. She has published widely on moral and political philosophy, aesthetics and most recently on bioethics, ethics of technology and research ethics. Her articles have appeared in Australasian Journal of Philosophy, Bioethics, Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics, European Journal of Philosophy, Philosophy and Literature, Trames. She has written 1 monograph, edited 7 books and contributed to volumes published by Ashgate, Cambridge University Press, Francke, Gunter Narr, mentis, and SAGE. She has coordinated numerous national (10 grants) and international (8 grants) R&D projects. She is member of the Estonian President’s Advisory Board, member of the Estonian Council of Bioethics, member of the Clinical Ethics Committee of Tartu University Clinic, member of the Estonian National Committee of UNESCO, and member of the Council of the Academia Europaea (London). She has also served as a scientific advisor the European Commission for the 7th Framework program as well as an ethical advisor for both the 6/7th framework.

The experts provide information needed to address ethical issues adequately and advice on other information sources. Health NCPs are invited to consult the advisory group on any ethical issue related to projects proposed for funding under the Health theme of the 7th Framework Programme.
